Chaunté Vaughn

Let’s talk about my friend Chaunté shall we? Chaunté Vaughn has an impeccable eye as seen through her photographic and styling work, but as you are well aware by now, the moment you add a flower into anything I’m suddenly all ears. She’s created this series of portraits of a sweet little one named Kayla who is a) way ahead of her time and b) a really good sport with the floral crowns.
I had to add in this last one even though there are no flowers because well, it’s too much.
There are moments when I get sad that I’m not in America and it’s oftentimes moments like these when I wish I could collaborate with really amazing people like Chaunté. Chaunté, hats off!

Garden couture at Dior

Raf Simons debuted his first collection for the house of Dior at last week’s Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2012 show. He envisioned a magical canvas of flowers within an intimate salon setting to set off his feminine silhouttes. I’d say….ACHIEVED! Each room contains hundreds of thousands of flowers from floor to ceiling: peonies, goldenrods, dahlias, carnations, delphiniums, roses…oh my!

The kicker is this video of assembling the set. The stylist in me is thinking “so much work to do in so little time” and the daughter-of-a-finance-father is thinking “how much is each flower?!”And the artist in me is thinking “now, THAT’s how you create magic in fashion.” I think this is the perfect blend of all the arts: fashion, set design, interior design, floral design. Dior, hats off for creating magic. You’re living out my dream budget. Now, go watch the video and check out Dior’s magazine.

Thanks Rubi for the tip!

The magic that is Tage Andersen

When I first moved to Denmark someone left me a comment saying that I needed to get to know the work of Tage Andersen. I’m very obedient so I did. I was in love. I wrote a blog post. Check. However, I only viewed his website and somehow didn’t fully understand that he had a shop/gallery/museum here in Copenhagen. Not only that, but that this place will take you to another world.
I stumbled on it a few weeks ago and somehow knew from a distance that this was his shop. I walked in, gasped, and nearly started to cry. Ok, I might be slightly overemotional, but truly, he’s created another world. There are oversized bird cages and exotic birds walking around, sculptures he’s created, and flowers, flowers, flowers everywhere. You might imagine that my heart nearly stopped. WELL, yesterday I accidentally ended up on Ny Adelgade again and guess who I saw just outside? TAGE ANDERSEN! Now, the man is distinct. He looks and dresses as if he’s from another era. “Excuse me, excuse me, are you Tage Andersen?” He turns and I know I’ve got my guy. “Yes”. Then I become a blubbering fool. A BLUBBERING FOOL! My heart sped up, “I’m a huge fan…” and you kind of know how it goes from there. Needless to say, I returned after my meeting to go through the museum and was entranced and Mr. Andersen was so kind to let me go through and look through his creations including a garden in the courtyard. Please check out a few details here.
The best part is that he has a home (a palace really) in Sweden, Gunillaberg, where he has more of his creations. It’s only open in the summer, so you must go.

30 til 30: floral basket

I’m already SO far behind on my 30 ’til 30 pledge. This is not a good sign. I thought I’d kill 2 birds with 1 stone with a second installment of “On my bike” for one of my craft days. For the month of April I made aluminum flowers and this month I caved and went with fake flowers. But really, can you resist these bright, cheap puppies? They’re like a buck at Tiger and they seriously make my day every time I look at them.

With that, I’m off to Berlin tomorrow for the weekend to attend The Hive.

So where we at? 25 days to go and 27 more projects.

DIY Ice cream cone vases

This is one of my favorites for Oh Happy day! It combines four of my favorite things: ice cream + flowers +  bright colors + stripes. Too much goodness. The photoshoot with Hilda was one of the craziest yet as we were shooting a few projects and I was delayed because I couldn’t find helium anywhere in town for the balloon project, then the ATM ate my card. Boo! I ended up having to cab it home, which I never ever do here in Copenhagen; you might as well give them your first born for the price they charge you. Needless to say, Hilda is meget meget (so, so) patient.*
What you can’t really tell about my hair right now is that it’s orange. If I were to hold it straight up in the air it’d look like candy corn with the white from the first dye job, the orange from the most recent, and my roots coming in. Sick. I guess it’d be more appropriate if it were October. TMI, sorry.

Anywhoo, check out the full DIY at Oh Happy Day.

*Danes love repeating words for emphasis. I find myself faking Danish just by repeating a few select phrases in a really deep, gutteral voice and they seem to love it.
