August Book Club: Tales From the Back Row

Tales From the Back Row

Tales from the Back Row: An Outsider’s View from Inside the Fashion Industry

Happy August, readers! Your summer might be winding up, but we have a fun book to make you laugh as you enjoy the last warm evenings in your hammock. Do fashion shows inspire you? Does your heart beat faster? Or are you thinking “What in the WORLD are they wearing?? Someone actually thinks this looks good on a HUMAN??” In Tales from the Back Row: An Outsider’s View from Inside the Fashion Industry by Amy Odell, we hear both sides of the story.

Odell, an editor whose career began as a journalist and (sometimes snarky) fashion blogger, constantly walked that tightrope of insulting these crazy fashion people who think nothing of wearing leather pants as daily office attire, yet couldn’t say yes fast enough at a chance to interview with THE Anna Wintour for a job at Vogue. Odell gives us a glimpse of NY’s Fashion Week, of interviewing models and celebrities, of the hierarchy of reporters vs. bloggers, and ultimately the contrast of serious business with the ridiculous! She’s part of the industry but slightly removed, which makes her honest observations totally hilarious. We hope you like it (and maybe learn something new about the industry)! Join us during the month of August as we post about Tales from the Back Row, and stay tuned for some printable artwork!

Icelandic Paper Poppy + The New JOANN

Icelandic Paper PoppyIf you’re a crafter, creator, designer, or maker of any means, chances are you’ve been to JOANN to fulfill your supply needs. Our local JOANN practically knows us by heart we go there so often! We were lucky enough to partner with Joann to help them reintroduce their new and improved brand. Becca and I (and Baby J!) traveled to New York to “Experience the New JOANN” and teach attendees how to create an Icelandic paper poppy. We joined Naomi of Bakers Royal and Kim from Sweet Red Poppy to bring “Handmade Happiness” to life in multiple forms. It was such an incredible night to be amongst so many talented and passionate makers. These are our people! JOANN is no longer just a fabric store. So make sure you go and explore your nearest location!

Royal Wedding Mood Board

Royal Wedding Mood Board-2866

Was anyone else inspired by the Royal Wedding this past weekend? Honestly, I’m sad it’s over! We won’t have another royal wedding for a long time! Although there were elements of the wedding I would have altered (not about the small bouquet trend–more is more!), I thought it was breathtaking in its entirety! To keep the fun going a little bit longer, we put together a Royal Wedding Mood Board inspired by the special day of the new Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Aubrey Hepburn, lush foliage and English Gardens, and a muted palette create a beautifully timeless wedding. We also put together a lookbook for the wedding, complete with everything you need to put together a royal-inspired wedding! What was your favorite part of the wedding? We want to know!

Shop all the elements of the Royal Wedding!

DIY sleeping masks

DIY face masks

I was asked by Rescue Remedy to talk about what is stressing me out lately and I was like, “finally!!!!!!” I get to complain for a living! Ha! But seriously. If you follow me on Insta Stories on Snapchat you know I’m super comfortable talking about what gets me stressed out, and then other times I’m totally silent on social media because I’m TOO stressed out AND because no one likes to hear anyone complain that much. BUT! This isn’t just a complaining session, it’s a let’s-talk-about-how-to-get-through-the-stresses session. Let me be your therapy 🙂 AND, let me tell you about these adorable DIY sleeping masks we made to go with the Rescue products.  Read on →

Review of the 5 best planners of 2016

Best beautiful planners

It was probably 2007 or 2008 when I stumbled on a weekly calendar from Kate Spade on sale at Anthropologie. It was a spiral paper back but and each page was beautifully illustrated and wonderfully inspiring. I had never seen anything like it! I heartily marked it up because I just wanted to look at the pictures. And in the mean time, I stayed organized. Sadly, I haven’t seen a similar version since.

Selecting a planner is a personal and potentially life-altering decision. Over the years I’ve had a number of systems that I’ve used for organizing my schedule and life. For a few years I was a dedicated Moleskin devotee. You know those mini leather-bound books? It comes in a planner form and I loved it! Small and fits into everything. Once phones started to take over as my primary scheduler I didn’t refer to a hard copy anymore and my Moleskin went the route of the dodo bird.

Now that I have a permanent office and many more things to juggle, I find myself using a number of scheduling platforms. I use the Sunrise app on my phone, which connects with Google Calendar and is great for combining all the different categories of my business and personal life. For example, I have an Intern Calendar, Content Calendar, personal calendar, and building calendar for my studio. It’s great because only the people invited to see them can see the specific calendar needed.

However, I find myself needing that tangible element.

See below to read my reviews of the 5 best planners out on the market now! And see which one I’m trying out this year!
