Go all out with the holiday decor this year

I don’t know about you, but all this extra time spent at home has me dying for a change. I’m so happy to be prepping our new home to move in soon (fingers crossed! Check out our lastest house update here!) But if you’re in need of a change that isn’t so drastic or longlasting, decorating for the holidays is the PERFECT way to change it up your space without a major overhaul. Hang a garland on your mantel, paint some pumpkins,

Last month we brought back these DIY Rainbow Pumpkins to begin decorating for fall! If you’re looking to add some character to your rainbow pumpkins, check out the Pumpkin Faces PDF template in our Halloween shop! Who knew pumpkins could be so cute?

Plan your holiday parties in advance

Get those dates on the calendar now for Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas! You’ll thank me later. Parties might turn into zoom calls, and holiday trips might turn into facetime calls to the grandparents, but at least you can plan to make the next few months special no matter what. Even if only your immediate family can make the guest list this year, check out our 11 ideas for a Halloween party to spark some ideas.

In our Halloween sale, you’ll also find garland templates, party invites, cake toppers, and plenty of other ways to complete your Halloween look this year. For the biggest discount, check out our Halloween E-book full of our most popular printables! (psst, even the e-book is an additional 30% off!)

Find a clever Halloween costume

Costumes are, in my opinion, one of the hardest parts about Halloween planning. You want to be creative and stylish without splurging on a new costume every year, right? We have plenty of costume PDF templates—  for both kids and adults—  discounted in our shop. The best part is that these costumes can be put together in under an hour AND you can use items you probably already own to complete the look. This halloween sale is meant to make your load lighter this year (so you can carry more weight in candy) 😉

Find joy in giving holiday gifts

There is no need to hold off on the giving spirit until December. I think any holiday is a great reason to drop off some neighbor gifts! We created some printable gift boxes to fill with seasonal candy and gift to a friend. This will come in handy more than ever this year when who knows if trick or treating will even be a thing??

Even if you’re staying in this Halloween, we have discounted items in our shop to help share the Halloween spirit! Send out some Halloween cards to friends, family, neighbors, and those you wish to share this spooky season with. The perfect pairing with one of these cards is a Halloween candy gift box! You can find the instructions for putting together the gift boxes here.

Enjoy your stress-free Halloween planning with 30% off printables (don’t forget the code: PRESPOOKY30)! You can find more Halloween sale printables in our shop!

Take time to make DIY holiday decor

The upside to this “new normal” and the impact it will have on the holiday season, is more and more people are taking time to create and get crafty! We love to see it. Adding a homemade touch is what makes holiday decor special, home-y, and a potential family heirloom. You can dive as deep into our 10+ years of archives as you want to go, but some of our favorite Halloween DIYs are these wood plaque transfers, or our rainbow pumpkin arch!

Paris-Inspired Design: A Bastille Day Bash

How to visit Paris without leaving home

Bastille Day is akin to the USA’s Independence Day in that it marks an important historical turn towards democracy. The bastille building itself was an armory that citizens of Paris stormed and set political prisoners free on July 14, 1789. Modernly, people celebrate in different ways all over the country! My favorite tradition takes place each year in the gardens of the President’s residence, the Palais de l’Elysee. The President hosts a picnic!! Isn’t that amazing? Take your own trip to France tomorrow by celebrating Bastille Day!

Cue the inspiration for my Bastille Day celebration: I’m throwing myself a picnic. Make your picnic simple and clever with these printable placemats!

Our Paris cake toppers from illustrator Jessie Kenelos Weiner, author of Paris in Stride are available for FREE! Download your own and make breakfast extra sweet tomorrow morning. Plus, you can count this as tomorrow’s homeschool geography lesson 😉

How to celebrate like a Parisienne

Lars girls love garden parties and all things French, so this particular celebration is downright delightful. I whole-heartedly suggest you decorate with some adorable France printables, as they are an easy way to play with the stylish theme: Paris-inspired design. Take color cues from there! The tricolore of red, white, and blue is simple and classic – just like French design. Don your best Breton striped top (blue and white of course), chic trousers/skirt, and a pop of color in the form of red lipstick. Stay up late and light off fireworks to celebrate the end of the day.

Print off our Paris crown and invitation suite here for your next party. Whether you are celebrating Bastille Day, a garden party, a birthday party, or anything else – this party is sure to be tres chic.

How to decorate and dress like a Parisienne

I can’t write about Paris without mentioning how much I adore the style and design identity of this city. With each encounter, I feel creatively inspired. You got your first taste of this with our tips on how to recreate the iconic style of Monet’s French home. And everyone knows Paris has the best fashion. They even have a best baby’s clothes! As I figured when I visited while pregnant with Jasper. Here are a few of my favorite tips and tricks for incorporating Paris-inspired design in your home and wardrobe.

1. Don’t overdo it

You’ve probably heard this quote from Coco Chanel: “Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take at least one thing off.” I’m pretty sure she is talking about accessories here…  Still, the advice stands – Paris-inspired design/fashion tends to be somewhat minimal. The pieces themselves can be extravagant and ornate, but use a light hand when decorating and accessorizing.

2. Mix the classic with the eclectic

Part of what makes Paris so magical is its history. There’s just so much that has happened in that ancient city, and all of it feels magical. Select pieces that reflect the growth of the city! Ornate mirrors and crown moldings look fantastic juxtaposed with chic European modernism. Picture a chunky strand of gems or pearls atop a simple black suit jacket. Or fabulous shoes beneath a pair of pleated shorts. Invest in a few significant Paris-inspired pieces, then really showcase them.

3. Embrace romance

The feel of Paris is really worth celebrating and if you’ve been, you know that feeling is one of romance. It’s almost as if some city official found a way to transform Edith Piaf’s La Vie en Rose into a scent and then pipe it through every vent in the city. If you’ll take a moment to recall the romantic moments of your life, I’m sure you’ll discover what I have: it’s all about the details. The same idea goes for creating a romantic feel for a space or look! Pick one romantic touch, like long-stemmed candles, your grandmother’s hand-embroidered pillows, ornate frames surrounding photographs from memories you love, sheer curtains, or a touch of crystal. Little details like these can make even the coldest rooms come alive.

Paris-inspired Decor

France-inspired art prints to hang on your walls

We firmly believe anyone can pull off a beret, and this print from Monica Dorazewski agrees! Or for a more subtle reference to the city of love, transport your self to the Palais-Royal with this Stripes is Rhythm print from Jaqueline Diedam.

Fill your home with the art of French artist Julie Marabelle. We carry some of her stunning papercut art in the Lars Print Shop and they have added a touch of a French garden to my bedroom. You can read more about her life in France here.

Other fun French items

Everything you need for Paris-inspired design filling your home. If you are planning a trip to France, our favorite guides are Paris in Stride which you can read more about here. As well as Paris by Design by my good friend Eva Jorgensen. You can also find our guide to small shops in Paris here. As well as our itinerary from our last visit to France, here!

Memorial Day Paper Poppy Pin

How to celebrate Memorial Day

What are some of your Memorial Day traditions? Here at Lars, our holiday plans usually include hot dogs. After that, maybe a dip in the pool, and lots of time with family! However, this Memorial Day might look a little different than what we’re used to. (Much like everything else these past few months.) So, this has us thinking about how we can celebrate new, or at least new to us, traditions! We are taking this opportunity to remember the sacrifices people have made out of love for their country. Today, we’re pulling inspiration from Remembrance Day, with our very own paper poppy pins!

DIY paper poppy pin for memorial day

In addition to roasting up some hot dogs this Monday, add this project to your family activities! Not only are these paper poppies super easy to make, but the pin is so sweet you’ll want to wear it all summer long! We love the way these turned out and can’t wait for you to make your own paper poppies!

How to make a paper poppy pin for Memorial Day

Supplies needed:

All supplies are linked on Amazon Prime so you can make your pin in time for Memorial Day!

  • Cardstock in red, green, and black
  • Template
  • Embroidery floss in red and green
  • glue gun
  • scissors
  • needle
  • pin backing
  • pencil

Instructions:

  1. First, download and print your templates
  2. Cut out three “petals” from the red” template.
  3. Cut out a circle from the black using your template. This is your stamen. Make tiny incisions into the circle as close to each other as possible all the way around the perimeter. Curl the edges of the stamen with a pencil and cup them so that they are as vertical as possible.
  4. Make the center that goes inside the stamen by gluing the four corners together. Also, glue the bottom to the inside of the stamen.
  5. Add embroidery stitches to the inside of the petals and to the leaves.
  6. Glue the petals together so that they evenly overlap each other.
  7. Glue the center onto the top petal.
  8. Add the leaves to the underside.
  9. Finally, add a pin backing to the back.
  10. Start a new tradition and wear your poppy pin this Monday!

Birthday Cake Topper with Brother

As you can probably tell by now, we can’t stop talking about how much we love National Craft Month. It’s the perfect time to celebrate your creativity and get to work crafting up all of the amazing things you’ve been thinking about. If you are feeling like you are in a bit of a craft funk we have teamed up with our friends at Brother to bring you a sweet yet impactful project to get you out of your slump and on your way to crafting town!

Using the Brother P-touch ELITE we created these colorful flag cake toppers inspired by our newest line from Abby Low found in the Lars Print Shop. You may know by now that we love celebrating and since we are already celebrating craft month we figured we may as well celebrate anyone and everyone out there with a March birthday with these adorable birthday flag cake toppers.

Birthdays are so very special and we tend to go bananas decorating and that’s part of the reason we love using the P-touch ELITE because of how easy it makes it to create personalized ribbon! Think up your birthday phrases and print them on ribbon (the P-touch Embellish ELITE prints on tape too!) so you can create the perfect phrases, specific for your birthday queen or king!

Here’s how you do it!

Directions:

  1. Pick your color palette
  2. Paint your skewers to the colors you have chosen. We painted three skewers of each color and used 21 skewers and six colors (the more the better in our opinion)
  3. Set aside to dry.
  4. Paint the wood beads in the same palette, three of each color in all six colors.
  5. Set aside to dry.
  6. Download the Ptouch Design&Print app to your phone!
  7. Select “Create your own label”.
  8. Select “text” and add in whatever you want the ribbon to say or even a graphic!
  9. Once the text is in click “Done”.
  10.  Adjust the “Taper length” depending on how long your message is.
  11. Scroll to the left to find “label alignment” and align your text to the right”
  12. Once your text is in and the alignment is correct click “print”
  13. Set your ribbon to the side and begin building your flag frame.
  14. Attach a piece of wire around  the dried painted skewer by wrapping it around the top.
  15. Once the wire is attached, measure the length of the wire against the length of the ribbon and cute wire accordingly.
  16. Using the glue stick apply glue to the back of the ribbon.
  17. At the mid point on the ribbon place the skewer there and fold the ribbon in half so the wire is in in between the two halves.
  18. Attach a painted wood bead to the top using a hot glue gun.
  19. Place completed flag in cake!

We love using the Brother P-touch ELITE it is the perfect easy-to-use ribbon and tape printer that you can use to create any and all of the exciting crafts you have planned for this Craft Month! We can’t wait to see what you create!

The green polka-dot background is from our Lars Print Shop. Thank you @glweddingcakes for the lovely cake!
