This week

Greetings from Provence! I write this while my mom sleeps. I wonder if she’ll ever wake knowing what she’s been through in the last 4 days. She took the longest flight ever (LAX>Istanbul>CPH) to come visit me all before jumping on a plane to Nice. THEN, after a 3 hour drive through the Southern villages of France (top left photo), we arrived in our little apartment where we are staying for the weekend. Needless to say, I hope she sleeps all day! Our apartment is situated in the Luberon Valley and we are more than thrilled to be here. The colors! The building materials! The temperature! (I speak in exclamation marks far too much). It feels like a dream. I can’t wait to write more about it for you.

This week has been quite eventful. Paul and I celebrated our 2 year anniversary at a little restaurant located in the plaza of the bottom right photo. We had some friends from England come to visit us and we got to do some site seeing including the Little Mermaid (top right). Sunday we visited with Paul’s adorable niece in her darling neighborhood with thatched roof houses (middle right). If you’ve been wondering how I transport my oversized paper flowers around without a car, let me tell you, it takes creativity. And lots of twine, (middle left). (Bottom left), having some fun with the French murals in our little town.

2 years and thoughts about marriage

Paul and I celebrate two years of marriage today. Yay! On one hand I can’t believe we’ve been married for two years and on the other hand, whoa! I feel like I have SO much to learn still. Most of all, I’ve learned that I’m a SLOW learner. You can be taught your whole life how to have a happy marriage, but you can’t know HOW to apply it until you’re in it and learn things that work for you and your partner. For example, not going grocery shopping together is one of our keys to happiness. Check.
I’ve had a few people mention how they can’t seem to find my wedding pictures on this blog and looking back, it’s because I didn’t post too many here. They were originally published on 100 Layer Cake so I thought I’d post a bunch load today, including some never before footage (so reality show-ish!). Careful, it’s gonna be a doozy.
I remember the day feeling surreal. A lot of the steps of the day kind of seemed like robotic motions because you’ve seen weddings on tv, movies, with friends, etc and then all of a sudden you’re the star of the show. Even if you’re sick (I had a cold and Paul’s back had gone out) you’re running on pure adrenaline and you keep that smile plastered on your face. I was determined not to be frantic or nervous or bridezilla and I don’t think I was, but maybe you should ask someone else for the truth.
But, let’s talk about regrets now. One thing I regret about the day was that I didn’t have our family and friends speak at our reception. I would have LOVED to have heard the speech I’m almost positive my dad prepared. If you know my dad, you know he doesn’t mind a mic (to put it mildly).
The biggest thing I’ve learned about marriage so far is that it’s not something you can do half-heartedly. If you want a marriage to work, you gotta WORK at it. It’s a consistent investment of time and thought. You can’t do something thoughtful one day and think you’re good for while. It’s an every day thing. It’s an “I love you so much I want to make your day good” thing. Oh my, I’ve got a long way to go. I’ve learned that I’m not perfect. Ha! I must have thought I was when I was single. Well, needless to say, marriage is humbling, terrific, relentless, fulfilling and so many other opposites. Thankfully, I’ve married a very patient man who I’ve grown to love more and more each day.
What’s your key to a happy marriage? I’d LOVE to know!

This week

We’re currently staying at our friend’s place for the week located right by the Marble Church (Marmorkirken) and we’re loving it! Remember what it’s like to step right outside and have your choice of restaurants, grocery stores, and cute shops? Oh man, I miss this proximity! There’s the BEST shop across the street, Fil de Fer, whose owner Lars Kristensen, has packed with the most exquisite home furnishings from France. I want it all (like these chairs above shot in front of the store front). The edible flowers, above, were picked from the garden outside our real home that we placed on our Sunday meal.

This week:

This week

Blogging on a Sunday? Who knew?! My friend Melinda is visiting for the week and she brought the sunshine. You are welcome anytime, friend! Last week Paul and I went to Kulturhavn, which was basically lots of events going on at all the different harbors around town, hence all the balloons and papel picado above. The polaroid is a little sneak peek of an upcoming project I’m stoked to show you. And Friday night we attended the Dansk Dansetheater at Polotigården for Melinda’s birthday. The show wasn’t as good as last year’s but Charlotte did the amazing costumes and we just love the excuse to attend a concert in the amazing police headquarters. It’s outside in the circular courtyard surrounded by pillars. It feels a bit Sound of Music where the Von Trapp’s are singing their final performance before making their escape. Speaking of the Von Trapp’s, we are heading to Vienna and Salzburg this week for a quick trip, do you have any suggestions? I’ve never been but I have a secret wish to love it. We are most definitely doing a Sound of Music tour, and I love Mozart so something Mozart-y? Anyone?

This week
Katie will now be doing a monthly playlist for Lars. Wahoo!
The Blog’nhagen video was released and I think Liv captured just how much fun we had.

Lars’ (play) List: August

I’m the WORST when it comes to finding new music. I basically listen to classical, oldies, whatever gets my groove on, Janet Varney’s JV Club podcasts, or whatever people give me. Basically, I rely on much cooler people to fill my ipod. Enter, Katie Farber of This, That, & The Other. In addition to contributing twice a month with a “Outfit to room” she’ll be providing a playlist on the first Monday of each month. Yay! New material for my route to work. Thanks Katie!
