If you’re just joining Lars now, welcome! Sit back or pull up a chair and make some things with me. Last year I entered a Kentucky Derby hat contest at the Today Show (see the clip here). They flew me out to NYC for a live show and I won! I won a 3′ trophy. I thought I’d show you how to make it yourself. This one is almost twice as large as the one I made for the show (see the one from the show here), but it shows you can make it in a variety of sizes.
This time I used a Laura Ashley scarf to tie around my neck to hold it in place and I provided the tutorial on Laura Ashley’s blog in addition to below.
- paper (mine was 19×24″)
- scissors
- pencil
- spray paint for a little flare
- Laura Ashley scarf
- glue gun
- duct tape
Step 2: Spray paint the bottom edges of each petal for some flare. Optional.
Step 3: Roll the first petal and glue. This will be the center of the rose.
Step 4: Glue one edge of the next petal on one side of the center of the rose. Glue the other side of the petal to the other side of the center of the rose.
Step 5: Take the next petal and glue it on the opposite side of the petal. Repeat to the other side of the center.
Step 6: With the last 3 petals, add about 6″ of glue on the bottom of the petal and glue it around the base of the core flower.
Step 7: Your flower should be done. The last step is to add on your straps made form a Laura Ashley scarf by cutting the scarf in half down the center.
Step 8: Attach it to the center inside of the flower with duct tape.
