Oh embroidery, how I love thee! In the classic chick-flick You’ve Got Mail, the plucky protagonist Katherine Kelly carries with her a hanky that was embroidered by her mother. With her mother gone, the hanky served as a vestige of days gone by. It was something that carried memory and meaning beyond its function of wiping noses. Embroidery has become increasingly popular in the last few years, with everyone from crafters to Gucci designers alike picking up embroidery floss. Seriously, it’s amazing how many big names in fashion are using embroidery! There’s just something about it that makes the piece feel special. Let’s call it the “feel-good factor.”
The feel-good factor is just as important as a principle of design because when it is present, people notice. Embroidered work feels personal and intimate, tying the owner to the piece. It also carries with it emotion that otherwise would be lost in a different medium. Would Katherine Kelly care so much about that hanky if it was screenprinted? Not a chance! That hanky reminded her of her mother and represented a central theme of the movie – that old things, however quaint, could be replaced by modernity.
