If you remember last year, we did a series of ways to wear pink for Valentine’s day. We’re continuing the tradition with another idea and today it’s a cupid’s arrow collar pin. I love how subtle yet clever this one is–not too obnoxious, though I’m not against being obnoxious for holidays. Materials: template, scissors, red polymer clay, pink polymer clay, x-acto knife, rolling pin, parchment paper or silicone mat to protect your work surface, baking sheet, oven, long doll-making needle (measures about 3.5″-4″)
Directions:
1. Condition both colors of polymer clay (this video shows you how to do it). I found sticking the clay between two sheets of parchment paper and rolling it with a rolling pin to work well.
2. Marble the pink and red polymer clay together. I used this tutorial, but instead of putting it through a pasta roller I put the clay between two sheets of parchment paper and rolled it out with a rolling pin until the clay was about .5 cm thick.
3. Cut out the template pieces. Lay the template pieces on the marbled polymer clay and cut around them using an x-acto knife. You may want to practice on extra clay first until you’re confident in getting a smooth cut.
4. Stick the eye end of the needle into the “feather piece” of polymer clay. Stick the sharp end int the “arrow piece” and then remove. This will make a hole for the needle to stick into later.
5. Lay your pieces on a baking sheet and bake according to the directions on the clay packaging. You’ll be baking them with the needle still stuck into the “feather piece”.
6. Allow pieces to cool. The “arrow piece” will be the cap to the stick pin (so you can take it on and off) and the “feather piece” should remain attached to the needle.
