We hope you’ve loved reading about Drew Barrymore and her life experiences in this month’s Book Club book, Wildflower. Her love of life is apparent and her refreshing, candid way of connecting with you as a reader almost makes it feel like you’re having a conversation with her. Am I right?? Here are a few questions to consider as you finish up Wildflower, plus some further reading suggestions and a printable quote and booksmarks from the book from this month’s guest illustrator, Danielle Kroll.
1. In preparation for the filming of Charlie’s Angels, Drew and friends were shipped to Utah for an extreme outdoor hiking/camping experience, one that she hated, yet in the end learned so much from. Drew says, “Everything has to get taken away.” Do you agree?? What have you learned when things – and not just physical things – have been taken away? Are we most teachable at our most humble?
2. Drew’s father was rarely present in her life, but a few months before he died, she was taking care of him as he looked into her eyes and said, “You were made perfect.” (First of all, that is so beautiful!) She says it was his way of telling her he loved her. But was there more? Was he admitting to his faults as a parent? Expressing regret in those four little words?
3. Speaking of fathers, describe Steven Spielberg’s role in Drew’s life. Her chapter “The School of E.T.” says so much about him – the children in the movie truly loved him and “realized their potential through him”. What did he provide for Drew??
4. The tables have turned, now that Drew is a mother of two beautiful girls herself. She says, “The point is you do your best. Your very best every day. You do it, and you do it for them!” What life lessons has she already put into action as she has begun raising her daughters?
Enjoy the rest of your summer as you finish Wildflower! Check these out too:
- The Barrymores: Hollywood’s First Family by Carol Stein Hoffman and Leonard Maltin
- Little Girl Lost by Drew Barrymore
- And if you like celebrity memoirs…there are so many! But I’ve loved these:
- Bossypants by Tina Fey (This will have you laughing/crying…)
- Home: A Memoir of My Early Years by Julie Andrews (I adore her, and for some reason, when I was little, I thought I was named after her…)
