I took a nod from our Easter egg paper flower terrariums to make these ones but this time with air plants! It’s a super easy way to decorate for Easter, especially if you want to keep your decor a bit more subtle.
Since spring celebrates a time of rebirth, creating a miniature ecosystems encapsulates the wonder of nature in a glass container, offering a mesmerizing glimpse into the delicate balance of life.
What is a terrarium?
Essentially, a terrarium is a self-contained garden housed within a glass container. The word “terrarium” originates from the Latin word “terra,” meaning earth, and “arium,” meaning place. Terrariums come in various shapes and sizes, from small jars to large glass vessels, and they can contain a diverse array of plants, rocks, soil, and other decorative elements.
One of the most captivating aspects of terrariums is their ability to create a self-sustaining environment. The glass enclosure acts as a greenhouse, trapping moisture and heat to create a miniaturized ecosystem where plants can thrive with minimal maintenance. This makes terrariums an excellent option for those with busy schedules or limited gardening space. We’re creating ours more for decoration, but the idea is the same!
We’re making ours super low maintenance with the addition of air plants, but you could go to town making a real miniature garden. In fact, studies have shown that spending time in nature can reduce stress, improve mood, and increase overall feelings of well-being. With a terrarium, you can enjoy these benefits from the comfort of your own home, regardless of the weather or season outside.
In addition to being wonderful additions to your own home, terrariums also make thoughtful and unique gifts for friends and loved ones. From birthdays to housewarmings, a custom-made terrarium is sure to delight and inspire anyone who receives it.

Instructions
-
Spray the colored Easter egg inside and out. Let it dry for at least 24 hours but ideally more. You don’t want to suffocate your new plats with toxic fumes.
- Start by laying moss in the egg. I used two different types of moss–the green stuff and the white stuff as shown in the picture–so it would add variety
- Add in your air plants. You’ll need to follow the instructions accompanied with your air plants to make sure they stay alive.
- Allow air into the egg by either drilling a hole into the plastic or leaving the plastic part off for a good portion of the day.
Wouldn’t this Easter egg terrarium make the most lovely host gift? I would recommend leaving the top off overnight to give it some air. Terrariums serve as captivating decorative pieces, adding a touch of greenery and natural beauty to any space. Whether displayed on a windowsill, desk, or coffee table, they serve as conversation starters and focal points that bring a sense of tranquility and harmony to the room.
Terrariums are more than just miniature gardens – they’re windows into a world of natural wonder and beauty.
