Ok, ok, I know. I’ve entered my obscure costume era. I’m hoping that a few of you will know this reference and if not, honestly, it’s such a great book that you should go and read it and then come back and appreciate this year’s family costume for Halloween. As you know, I love a good costume and usually I think about it all year long, but this year it was kind of the last thing on my mind.
Woody, Hazel, and Little Pip is a book by Swedish illustrator and author, Elsa Beskow. Her illustrations are so delightful, especially her books about flowers. I’ve always wanted to do costumes based on her Flower’s Festival book, but some boys, I won’t name who, were not excited about that. Hmphf. SO, we went with Woody, Hazel, and Little Pip, which was Jasper’s most requested book in the last year.
Family costume
I’m not even sure I can find pictures of the book to show you the reference. I’m writing this from Australia where we’ve been visiting our family and I forgot to take pictures of the book before I left…this might be tricky. No wait, just took a look around–I found them. The beauty of the Internet, everyone.
Celine Anderson, our intern this semester, took the reigns on this project and she did such a great job! She’s from Denmark and has experience with sewing and art and this blended the two of those things perfectly.
Little Pip
We have Jasper as Little Pip. There are cardboard leaves that we added an elastic harness to. A hard nut hat with spikeys for full effect.
Little Pip recipe:
The troll
Paul as the mean troll. If you are familiar with the book, the troll doesn’t play a huge role, but it’s certainly the scariest. And the effect of her illustration felt like he was concocted from a nut or something. Certainly frightening!

For me, it’s all about the beard–hahaha. Such a good detail.
Mr. Squirrel
Now that I’m thinking about it a bit more, I’m realizing that we actually went with Woody, Hazel, and Little Pip because we already had the squirrel costume from Jasper from a few years ago and it fit Felix this time. Love a good reused costume.
Mrs. Acorn
I went as Mrs. Acorn. Celine made a beautiful quilted leaf for my acorn leaf cape and that adorable hat. Thinking of wearing it out and about because it’s that good 😉

Of course, we had to get in the spirit of things with that awful troll 😉
That’s it for this year! Would love to hear what you are dressing as this year! Tell me in the comments!
