I used to be all about a massive list of resolutions for the new year, but since having kids, Iām now about the little changes that make a big difference. And so far, theyāre doing the trick! To help me do so, Iāve partnered up with the iconic, the classic, the amazing MacKenzie-Childs, whose check collections have been ingrained on my brain ever since my mom carried their brand in her Corona del Mar shop in the 90s. I canāt believe Iām here 30 years later (what?!) talking about their pieces in my own home. Specifically, Iām talking about the 6 changes Iām making in the new year to bring peace and joy. And guess what, it truly has done that so far.
Another favorite memory was walking into the MacKenzie-Childs shop in NYC while I was visiting to be interviewed for a job during graduate school. I was absolutely blown away by the majesty of the check. I just adore the whimsical take on the traditional checkerboard and the maximalism spoke to my heart.
What I love about their Royal Check collection is that it can go with so many things and many different styles. In fact, I was worried it might be too much or too many pieces in my home. But who am I to argue with a perfectly placed maximalist decoration?! Not me! One piece is stunning and if youāre into collecting, think of all the joy many pieces would bring.
Ok, here are some things Iām aiming to do this year to bring a little more peace and joy to my home.
6 New Year’s Resolutions to bring peace and joy
1. Keeping fresh flowers in my house at all times
Fresh flowers just make things happier and dare I sayā¦fancier?! (And If Iām not, at least I can pretend like I am!). I went with their Great Vase, which has a beautiful opening for holding a great bunch of flowers. I gathered some white hydrangeas for it and love how they splayed out so perfectly. And if youāre curious, I first got three bunches from Trader Joeās and realized that it needed double. 6 bunches it is!
2. More tea breaks
Paul is obsessed with tea. In fact, heās been collecting teas from all over the world for years. Heās constantly making tea, but I just never give myself that time. I went with their 3 quart tea kettle which has a delightful wooden handle and glass topper because extra is always better. Iām thinking of keeping a stash of tea with me at my desk so I remember to do it! With their adorably charming tea kettle I may do it multiple times a day!
3. Print off more photos!
There’s an exclamation mark at the end for a good reason. Currently, 47,417 photos sit trapped in my phoneā¦I want to print more out of my family and put them in frames like this gorgeous frame. I got a 4×6ā in their Royal Check and am excited to have something to greet guests at the door with my two crazies.
4. Reading more together
We mostly read every night with the kids, but sometimes itās rushed. A cute lamp like this royal check table desk lamp might give me the impetus to get cozy! (and itās on sale!)
5. Do my make up
I usually look like a troll at school drop offāWaking up 5 minutes earlier to look a little more presentable might do the trick! Iāve never had a vanity mirror but now Iām realizing how helpful it is! And also worried about how much I didnāt blend in my powder before and tweeze my brows. Ha!
6. Welcoming more guests into the home
I have a hard time bringing people into my home when there are so many things that I find unappealing, but Iām wanting to change that this year! This sisal welcome mat is cozy and inviting. And itās surprisingly soft and cozy to walk on. Very excited to get rid of our previous one that weāve had for ten years that was long overdue for a change.
I added in some additional items into our kitchen because I couldnāt help myself. Their Royal Check utensil holder added in a charm I didnāt know a utensil holder could provide. And a spoon rest, which Iāve never had and am very excited for the spoons that will now get a proper resting spot.
Iād love to hear what changes (if any!) youāre making it to your year to hopefully bring a little more rest, peace, joy, whatever your goals are. Are you a resolutions person? Would love to hear it! Please share in the comments!
