Thereโs something magical about tinsel. Itโs the unsung hero of the holidaysโsparkly, fluffy, and unapologetically festive. Every year I find myself wanting to sprinkle it everywhere: the tree, the mantel, the banister, myself. And this year? Weโre taking it to the next level with a tinsel Christmas tree hat that is equal parts outrageous whimsy and pure holiday joy.

If youโve been around here long enough, you know I firmly believe that December is the perfect time to wear things on your head that would make no sense in any other season. (See also: flower crowns, heart-shaped fascinators, giant paper bows) A tinsel tree hat fits beautifully into the legacy.
This project is wonderfully approachableโno millinery degree requiredโand uses inexpensive materials you can find almost anywhere this time of year. I made one last year for a Christmas party about a half hour before I needed to leave–it’s so simple! With major impact! Itโs ideal for holiday parties, neighborhood caroling, school concerts, or for simply bringing a little extra sparkle to your kitchen while you bake cookies. It also makes a spectacular photography moment, especially for family cards or themed gatherings (or TMI, my dating profile pic). And if youโre looking for an easy holiday craft to do with kids or friends, this one hits the sweet spot: simple steps, big payoff.
Letโs get to it.

The tree cone
-
Print off the hat template and piece it together. Trace it onto poster board, cut out, and tape together.
-
Wrap the tinsel around the hat starting at the top and using glue gun to secure it.
-
Glue the retro glass ornaments to the tree. The ones I used are brand new and made to look retro. They are in the supplies list.
-
Add a ribbon to the top and into the sides of the inside of the hat to tie under your chin.
-
Enjoy!
Tinsel party
And thatโs it โ your tinsel Christmas tree hat is ready for its debut. Pair it with a cozy sweater, a sequined top, a velvet dress, or your Christmas morning pajamas. Thereโs no wrong direction.

The one I made for this tutorial is much taller than the one I made last year, but they all work.
The best part of this project is how instantly festive it feels. Itโs holiday spirit in wearable form โ lightweight, sparkly, happy, and just mischievous enough to make people smile the moment they see it. And isnโt that exactly what this season is about?
