What is Flag Day?
Signed into law in 1949, Flag Day has been a holiday to commemorate the adoption of the national flag for almost 100 years now! It’s a day to celebrate what we know as the American Flag, and how it came to be the symbol of our nation and country. There were many versions and adaptations of the flag before it became the stars and stripes that we are familiar with today. Flag Day is observed on June 14th every year, complete with ceremonies, parades, and other festive events.
Symbolism of the red, white and blue
Red, white and blue are the colors that were chosen to fly on the flag, but what do they mean? The flag has 13 horizontal stripes, with 7 red and 6 white. Each stripe represents the original 13 colonies, while the stars represent the 50 states. The colors of the flag themselves symbolize:
- Red – hardiness and valor
- White – purity and innocence
- Blue – vigilance, perseverance and justice
Cool huh!

Weekend project: Make an American flag picnic blanket
I love when I can find items that bring look and utility together – which is exactly what this American flag picnic blanket does! You can make one yourself and have the perfect patriotic spread to use all summer long. You’ll have the neighbors asking where you got it, and you can tell them how easy it was to DIY! This forever flag will always be ready when you need one handy.
Swag Flag necklace
Quick, easy and stylish! If you want some red, white and blue to wear on Flag Day, why not bring out the jewelry? The adorable Swag Flag necklace can even be made the night before, as long as it has an hour or so to dry before wearing. The ruffles are the perfect touch of texture to the long stripes we are so used to seeing. Stand out while wearing your outfit on theme!
American flag garland
Cue dainty American flag garland to put on the wall! This would be great for any large space where you want to cover more surface area. Easy to hang and an instant patriotic backdrop! It almost feels like a mosaic with a dozen tiny pieces that form a picture. Creative and artsy for sure!
4th of July American Flag Weaving
Whenever I really get a look up close and personal of a woven piece, I am always mesmerized by how it was made. A friend I met in Hawai’i several years ago sent me a macramé piece she had woven, which now hangs proudly in my bathroom. It always reminds me of those good times but also the time she took to weave all the intricate details! A 4th of July American Flag Weaving might be your thing if you’re considering more purposeful home decor. It can certainly serve as decorative and festive all at once!
Red white and blue outfit inspo
I get excited just thinking about outfit inspo. I do not get excited when I think about when I wore white pants on the 4th of July and sat in chocolate ice cream. Lucky for you, I am not your wardrobe stylist and Red white and blue outfit inspo is not limited to any particular order of clothing lol. The swipe through gallery we have here has me absolutely drooling. So many cute mix and match combo possibilities! I say best practice is, you can never go wrong by choosing pieces that you love!
Lady Liberty Flower Crowns
For all my time living in New York and visiting New York City, I somehow never saw the Statue of Liberty? I mean NYC is a huge place so maybe it’s not that hard to believe – just seems weird to have missed something so iconic! Good thing you don’t need to have seen it to make Lady Liberty Flower Crowns! Lars uses a certain arrangement of flowers to get the red, white and blue effect, but you are welcome to add in your own flower substitutes if you got ‘em.
3 DIY 4th of July Bunting Ideas
I just want everyone to know I did not know that this craft was called a bunting before, and kept imagining bundt as in bundt cakes. It’s not important and no we don’t need to bring it up again – but just in case you’re new to this concept, you’re not alone! Anyways, these 3 DIY 4th of July Bunting Ideas have a great traditional feel while also adding a twist on how the flag is typically displayed. The buntings look stunning outside in a porch or balcony as symbolic and unified imagery of the flag!
4th of July woven placemat
Having company for Flag day? June 14th does fall on Friday this year so you can kick off the weekend with neighbors or just observe the holiday at home with family! Either way, 4th of July woven placemats work beautifully for setting the table in spirit of the flag. This would even be a great craft to make on Flag day if you want an activity dedicated to the day. As always paper is a crafters best friend, so you know what to do!
Origami stars and stripes cake topper
Annnnnnnd who would Lars be without an Origami stars and stripes cake topper? I’ll let you worry about that as my mind is now on cake…toppers of course. Um, have you ever seen anything more charming?? I’m a minimalism gal, so I’m sold. Such a perfect balance of bold and cute – and won’t take all day to make!
