DIY Pom Pom Easter Egg Tree

As you know, we love an Easter tree (see here and here) and it’s becoming a tradition to try a new one every year. This year we are on a major pom pom kick (see our rainbow pom here! We’ve been experimenting a bunch and of course that certainly meant that we had to try our hand at an Easter egg! Yes, Easter is in two days, but this is one of those projects where you can sit with the tv on and go to town or even prep for next year. DIY Easter Egg pom pom

Materials:

• scissors (these are our favorite for pom making)
• one large knitting loom (we like this pack!)
• an assortment of colorful yarn
• an assortment of colorful ribbon (we used Studio Carta, of course!)

DIY Solid Pom Pom Easter Egg

 

1. Using your large knitting loom, open one side of arches.
2. Holding the two arches together, begin wrapping your chosen color of yarn around the arches all the way from one side to the other. When you begin wrapping the yarn, be sure to leave about an inch of the start of the yarn hanging down so that you are able to tie it to the end of the yarn when finished wrapping. Also, be sure to wrap the yarn so that the arches are covered densely (this will help your pom to be more full once it is opened).
3. Once wrapped enough, cut the end of the yarn and tie the beginning of the yarn to the end of yarn. Cut the excess strands after tying the knot.
4. Close that side of the knitting loom, and open the other side of arches.
5. Begin wrapping the same color of yarn on this side. Repeat steps 2-4.
6. Once both sides are wrapped, close the knitting loom.
7. With your scissors, cut through the yarn down the middle of the arches on each side of the loom.
8. Take a 36 inch piece of ribbon and wrap it around the center of the knitting loom where you just cut the yarn.
9. Tie the ribbon in a double knot around the knitting loom.
10. Once the knot is tied, remove the knitting loom from around the yarn.
11. Lastly, trim your pom so that it is in the shape of an egg.

How to make a striped Easter Egg Pom

• Using your large knitting loom, open one side of arches.
• Holding the two arches together, take the yarn that you will be using for the color of the stripe. Wrap this color in the middle of the arch.
• Cut the end of the yarn and tie the end piece to the beginning of the yarn. Cut the excess strands of yarn.
• Using the color of yarn that you will be using as your “base” color, wrap on one side of the middle stripe that you previously wrapped.
• Once finished wrapping this side, cut the end of the yarn and tie the end piece to the beginning of the yarn. Cut the excess strands of yarn.
• Next, wrap this same “base” color on the other side of the middle stripe.
• Once finished wrapping this side, cut the end of the yarn and tie the end piece to the beginning of the yarn. Cut the excess strands of yarn.
• Close this side of the knitting loom, and open the other side of arches.
• Repeat steps 2-7 on this side of the loom.
• Close the knitting loom.
• With your scissors, cut through the yarn down the middle of the arches on each side of the loom.
• Take a 36 inch piece of ribbon and wrap it around the center of the knitting loom where you just cut the yarn.
• Tie the ribbon in a double knot around the knitting loom.
• Once the knot is tied, remove the knitting loom from around the yarn.
• Lastly, trim your pom so that it is in the shape of an egg.

How to make a polka dot Easter Egg pom pom

1. Using your large knitting loom, open one side of arches.
2. Holding the two arches together, start with the color of yarn that you will be using as the “base” color of your egg. Wrap the yarn from one side to the other, but only about two or three wraps high. Cut the end of the yarn and tie it in a knot to the beginning piece of yarn.
3. After this first layer, you will start making your polka-dots. Take the color of yarn that you will be using for the polka-dots. You will wrap in three separate areas along the arch: one on the left, one in the middle, and one on the right.
4. Begin wrapping the yarn close to the very left side of the arch. Wrap the yarn about 9-15 times, depending on how big you want your polka-dots.
5. Cut the end of the yarn and tie the end piece to the beginning of the yarn. Cut the excess strands of yarn.
6. Begin wrapping the next polka-dot in the very middle of the pom. Wrap about 9-15 times.
7. Cut the end of the yarn and tie the end piece to the beginning of the yarn. Cut the excess strands of yarn.
8. Begin wrapping the third polka-dot close to the very right side of the arch. Wrap about 9-15 times.
9. Now, you will add another layer of your “base” color on top. Start wrapping from one side of the arch to the other. This layer will be about as thick as your first layer.
10. Cut the end of the yarn and tie the end piece to the beginning of the yarn. Cut the excess strands of yarn.
11. Next, you will add another layer of polka-dots. This time, you will wrap in two separate areas along the arch: in the 2 gaps between where the prior three polka-dots were wrapped.
12. On the left gap, begin wrapping the yarn you are using for your polka-dots in the same manner that you wrapped the previous polka-dots. Wrap about 9-15 times.
13. Cut the end of the yarn and tie the end piece to the beginning of the yarn. Cut the excess strands of yarn.
14. On the right gap, wrap the yarn 9-15 times.
15. Cut the end of the yarn and tie the end piece to the beginning of the yarn. Cut the excess strands of yarn.
16. Last on this side of the knitting loom, wrap one last layer of your “base” yarn. Wrap this color until the polka-dots are covered and the arch is even dense from left to right.
17. Cut the end of the yarn and tie the end piece to the beginning of the yarn. Cut the excess strands of yarn.
18. Close this side of the knitting loom, and open the other side of arches.
19. For this side, repeat steps 2-17.
20. Once both sides are wrapped, close the knitting loom.
21. With your scissors, cut through the yarn down the middle of the arches on each side of the loom.
22. Take a 36 inch piece of ribbon and wrap it around the center of the knitting loom where you just cut the yarn.
23. Tie the ribbon in a double knot around the knitting loom.
24. Once the knot is tied, remove the knitting loom from around the yarn.
25. Lastly, trim your pom so that it is in the shape of an egg.
