I never imagined being the type of person to go all out for a full family costume. It’s a lot of coordination, preparation, and needing to get people on board. BUT! I realized that the window of agreeability is very short with young children. Jasper is 5 and Felix is 2 and I can’t imagine that we’ll get too many more years out of it. So, a couple of years ago I decided to go for it. I mean, you know my thoughts about dressing kids for Halloween and the same is applied here. Family-themed Halloween costumes are not only adorable but also create lasting memories and not to mention, photos. Especially if you use the pics for the Christmas card–two birds with one stone amiright?! Here are some of my favorite Halloween costume ideas for families! And let me know yours in the comments!
Where the Wild Things Are Family Costume
Honestly, I don’t know if this one can ever be topped. We papier mached the masks and I’m thinking of framing and putting them on the wall I love them so much. It started when I realized that Jasper was a real life Max and we took it from there. Paul, Felix and I were Wild Things and the rest is history. My favorite.
2. Alice in Wonderland family costume
I realize we didn’t choose the main characters of Alice in Wonderland, but the ones I liked the most. This one started when I wanted Felix to be a walrus, so I based everything around him and that’s how Alice in Wonderland came to be. Jasper as a White Rabbit–I mean, come on!!! Paul’s playing card was a cinch, and I loved my spade costume. Get the full scoop here.
3. Run DMC
If there’s 3 of you, Run DMC is a fun one. I helped my friend Ali create a series of costumes for her baby triplets (can you even?!) and this was her suggestion, which I find hysterical.
4. The Bachelor
For the Bachelor themed family costume, we did a little bachelor and bachelorette (dying over the wig still) along with a rose to tie them together.
5. Diet Coke, Coca-Cola, Coke Zero family costumes
I adore how this one turned out. We used our Cricut to cut out the logos and attached little straw. Too cute! If you wanted to add more family members you could add in more soda or Coke products.
6. Ghost Busters
These little Ghost Busters are too cute. They were pretty simple with adding on a patch, googles, white suits, and boots! Check out where we got everything here.
7. Three Blind Mice
This Three Blind Mice costumes works works best for a family of three. Too cute!
8. Flower costumes
In my dreams I’m doing a version of Elsa Beskow’s Flower Festival book and this is pretty close. Think flowers, thistle, weeds. So good!
9. Classic Monsters
For a timeless and classic Halloween look, consider going as a family of monsters. Each family member can choose a different iconic monster, such as Frankenstein, Dracula, the Mummy, or the Werewolf. Accessorize with spooky makeup and props to complete the look. This theme is perfect for those who want to embrace the eerie side of Halloween.
10. Superheroes
Unleash your inner superheroes by dressing up as a crime-fighting family. Whether you’re fans of the Marvel or DC universe, there are endless possibilities for superhero-themed costumes. You can be the Avengers, the Justice League, or even a mix of both. Don’t forget to strike some heroic poses for those memorable photos!
11. Disney Magic
Disney characters are beloved by both kids and adults, making them an excellent choice for family Halloween costumes. You can choose to be classic characters like Mickey, Minnie, and Goofy, or go all out with a theme like the Disney princesses or villains. The magic of Disney will surely bring smiles to everyone’s faces.
12. Time Travelers
Take your family on a time-traveling adventure by dressing up in historical costumes from different eras. You can be a family of medieval knights, Victorian-era aristocrats, or even futuristic space travelers. This creative twist on family costumes is a unique way to celebrate Halloween. We did a viking for Jasper a couple of years ago–a family of vikings would be perfect!
13. Insects and Animals Halloween costume for families
For a whimsical and adorable family costume idea, consider becoming a group of insects or animals. You can be a swarm of bees, a pack of lions, or a school of colorful fish. This theme allows for creativity in choosing costumes and encourages the family to work together to create a cohesive look. We’re using Jasper’s squirrel costume as the base for this year’s family costume. Stay tuned!
9. Pop Culture Icons Halloween family costume
Stay up-to-date with the latest pop culture trends by choosing costumes inspired by famous movie characters, TV shows, or music icons. Whether it’s the cast of “Stranger Things,” the characters from “Star Wars,” or a family of rock stars, this theme lets you incorporate your favorite modern influences into your Halloween celebration. As you may recall, this Jared Leto at the Met Gala costume is my favorite things we’ve ever done. It’s weird and hysterical. You could be all characters from the Met Gala!
10. Famous Families Halloween costume
Pay homage to famous families from history, literature, or entertainment. You can dress up as the Addams Family, the Flintstones, the Simpsons, or even the royal family. This theme allows you to channel the personalities and quirks of these iconic families.
