Back-To-School: Designing Multifunctional Small Spaces before and after

Back-to-school has us thinking about the infamous “dorm room.”  Such a small space with generic and mismatched furniture. Decorating your first “space” is a coming-of-age ritual: looking for inspiration for bedding, wall art, plants, etc…  However, keeping a small space functional and cute can always be a little tricky. This got us thinking about Mary’s small space guest room (about 86 sq. ft.). We teamed up with DHP furniture once again (you can see previous posts here!) to create a multifunctional room that’s perfect for students and young professionals alike with the help of some of our favorite pieces.  With names like “Brittany” and “Jasper” (a happy coincidence!) we couldn’t help BUT snatch them up for our Back-to-School inspired room. Check out the before and after of Mary’s new space!

Daybed Dorm Room Makeover

If you’ve been to the store recently, chances are you’ve spotted the school supply section. Can you believe it’s already that time of the year? Luckily Jasper still has a few more years until we have to deal with that. We live in a University town though, so the area will soon be flooded with returning students and some starting fresh! My cousin Clare will be starting her freshman year here and I’m THRILLED to have some family nearby. That also means…DORM LIFE!  Did you live in the dorms at some point in your college career? Clare is moving halfway across the country for college so I wanted to make sure she felt at home! With the help of DHP Furniture we created the ultimate dorm room set-up and I’m sharing all our great finds with you!

If you have any advice, tips, tricks, words of wisdom to pass along to an incoming freshman, I’d love to hear it!

DIY Paper Tube Chandeliers

DIY Paper Tube ChandeliersAs soon as I laid eyes on the ‘Cocktail Lights’ of Hanna Anonen I fell in love immediately. The colors and playful shapes were so stunning. I needed to make a DIY version. These DIY Paper Tube Chandeliers are a fun way to bring color into a space. I love the impact a lovely chandelier can have on a room. These chandeliers are a fun alternative to basic desk lamps and don’t require any side tables! You can customize the color palette to whatever you desire, limited only by the paper variety at your nearest craft store. Paper, embroidery hoops, and twine are all you need for this DIY. You can easily install a hanging light bulb in the center of the tubes. On the other hand, they’re perfect without the light to serve purely as decor!

DIY Crib Skirt and Mattress Giveaway

DIY Crib Skirt

As one might expect at this point, I’m still getting the hang of this whole “Mom” thing. Every day is a learning day and it’s quite the wild ride! After doing my fair share of baby book reading, I’m constantly paranoid that Baby J might suffocate in his crib, stop breathing, or insert any other fear that gets ingrained in a new mother’s brain. DHP (remember their rad futon and bedding?!)  approached me about their Safety 1st Heavenly Dreams Crib and Toddler Mattress I couldn’t have been happier! This mattress is perfect for a worrying mama: Hypoallergenic, Thermo-bonded core so the babe gets plenty of support and water-resistant outer cover for easy clean-ups! What more could you want?! DIY Crib Skirt

This mattress really is top of the line and it won the 2017 Women’s Choice Award as Amerca’s Most Recommended Brand for Crib & Toddler Mattress. Since I am now determined to get Jasper sleeping in his crib with his new mattress I decided to go all in and complete the look with a DIY Crib Skirt. I wanted a traditional gathered look and had Becca, our resident seamstress, whip one up. And since baby mattresses are pretty standard (at least in North America), you can easily make one yourself with these same dimensions. It’s simple enough for a novice sewer.

Find out how to win a Safety 1st Mattress of your own and sew your own DIY Crib Skirt! Read on →

Napping at Work is a Thing

Are you familiar with the napping-at-work trend that seems to be taking the world by storm? If you’re confused, simply google “napping at work” and you’ll be sure to find yourself plenty of articles, opinions, and research backing up a workday snooze session. From the moment I heard about this napping phenomenon, I wondered why we hadn’t thought of this sooner! Now that I’m pregnant and will soon be bringing baby with me to work, I’m convinced it might as well be mandatory to have a space for napping on the job! Okay, perhaps not mandatory. The point is, we’ve been trying to create a space in our studio for a while that can serve as a multi-functional area as a waiting area, for meetings, relaxing, and naturally, napping!

However, it was difficult for us to justify bringing a bed into the studio, considering our small space issues. So we were thrilled when we came across the perfect Novogratz Futon from DHP Furniture that looks like a sleek couch one minute and can be transformed into a comfy bed the next! We were able to create an area that fits all our needs in one, without sacrificing space or style! Meaning that this pregnant mama with a soon to be little one can take all the rest she needs!
