Have you all gone to the pumpkin patch yet? Fall isn’t complete without a trip to pick pumpkins! I love to scatter a few out on my front porch to ring in the season and welcome me when I get home from work. But what about when I’m not a home? If you’re like me, you probably spend the majority or a large part of your day in your car! Crazy as it may seem, my car is like an extension of my home. I’ve always got a change of clothes, some packages, snacks, water bottles, you name it, and I’ve got it!

With that being said, we decided to partner up with Esurance to give our cars a personalized touch for the Halloween season! If homes deserve to be decorated, why shouldn’t your car? A pumpkin patch atop your car complete with cobwebs in the windows is the perfect way to make memories wherever life takes you this spooky season. So instead of piling your pumpkins in the trunk as you leave the patch, take a cue from Christmas trees and throw them on the roof! It’s sure to bring a smile to every passing car! Another bonus? This is the easiest way to deck your car for a trunk-or-treat!

Paper Bag Portrait Luminaries

Now that October has finally arrived we are ready to cover our houses with all the ghosts, goblins, and ghouls! Much like around Christmas time, I love walking around the neighborhood to check out all the different decorations that will soon greet the Trick-or-Treaters. So with that in mind, we decided to create some paper bag portrait luminaries to line your walkway to welcome all your spooky guests! You’ve probably seen a rendition of paper bag lanterns, but these ones each don an old black and white portrait to give a spooky touch. Think Disney’s Haunted House. With basic white paper bags, a printer, and some tea lights, you can create these easy lanterns and make sure your guests are properly watched over 😉

5 Mom and Baby Halloween Costumes

Halloween is fast approaching and there are few holidays I like more! Spooky and creepy may not seem like the name of the game here at Lars, but we love to go all out! What’s more fun than dressing up?! You’ve probably heard that I’m pregnant (yeah, that’s the bump under my dresses, folks), 24 weeks to be exact, so naturally, we have babies on the brain here! We’ve teamed up with Solly Baby this Halloween season to create 5 amazing mom and baby halloween costumes along with their daily giveaways on Instagram! Each costume has a component for the mom and then a way to dress up the Solly wrap in a coordinating costume for their baby. We are so thrilled with how they all turned out! And even if you don’t have a babe to tote around on Halloween, these costumes would still be amazing! I’m having a hard time choosing, but I think I’m going to go with the Russian doll costume myself! But who knows! They’re all so good!

“The Birds” Cake Topper

It’s mid-September already which means we’re knee-deep in Halloween crafts and costumes! Halloween is one of my favorite holidays because it’s a chance to embrace all things spooky and moody and even a little bit creepy, which I love. This may be a bit surprising to many of you, but it’s not always rainbows and flowers over here! So to kick off our Halloween posts this year we have “The Birds” cake topper, inspired, of course, by Alfred Hitchcock’s famous thriller. If you haven’t seen it, it’s a great “scary movie.” It is more suspenseful than anything and appropriate for all tolerance levels (I’m a bit of a wimp). Fun Fact: It was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry of the United States Library of Congress in 2016. So yes, it’s worth a watch!

Lucky for you, these birds won’t attack you when you go in to slice the cake. However, they do make a stunning centerpiece for a Halloween party! A really simple DIY, made even easier if you have a die-cut machine. We chose to pair our birds with a red velvet cake frosted with black icing to up the creepy factor a bit. They’d also make great cupcake toppers for a party if you nestled two or three birds on top. So bookmark this for your next spooky soiree and let “The Birds” cake topper take flight!

Pumpkin leaf favors

I was put in charge of writing thank you notes to a bunch of people that contributed to a church activity earlier this month. I decided to forgo the traditional card and envelope in lieu of something more seasonal: these pumpkin leaf favors! Of course, a handwritten thank you is always lovely (I certainly have a thing for stationery), but when you couple it with a festive pumpkin, it takes a “thank you” to the next level! I love using seasonal items for projects–pumpkins are plentiful right now and have a warm, natural feel that’s perfect for fall. We couldn’t give them away without including a pun, so on each leaf, we wrote: “Thanks for carving out time!” Pretty clever, right?

Our building needed some sprucing up for Halloween, but with all the creating we do, the only time I have for pure unadulterated brainstorming is in the car (and ahem, shower!). The dentist I’ve been going to is up in Salt Lake City, a 45 minute drive, and since I’ve had so many cavities (finally my chocolate covered cinnamon bear intake is catching up with me) recently, that means I’ve also had lots of brainstorming time. Clearly, any trip to the dentist reminds you of your mortality and your teeth. So yes, canines were on my mind. I came up with a vampire teeth garland. Muhahaha.

2 showstopper Halloween costumes made from everyday supplies

We’re finishing up our Halloween series with Bath and Body Works (you can see the first one here and the second one here) with 2 showstopper costumes made from everyday materials. We were inspired by Tahitian Island Dream to create a mermaid and Warm Vanilla Sugar to create a gilded mummy. By “showstopper” we mean that these ones will take a bit more time, but the results are so so worth it, no?! We had every intention of going the traditional fabric/sea shell route, but after seeing how much fun it was to create the unicorn, hippies, and Marie Antoinette costumes, I wanted to get my hands on some non-traditional items again. Can you guess what we made the mermaid costume out of?

As you know, paper is my medium of choice, so for today’s installment of costumes inspired by Bath and Body Works fragrance mists, we are creating 2 costumes made entirely from paper and I LOVE how they turned out. If I had a bazillion costume parties to dress for, I’d be every single costume we create but these one are closer to the top of the list. First, we created an oversized origami crane inspired by their Japanese Cherry Blossom fragrance as well as a bouquet of flowers costume inspired by their Hello Beautiful and Sweet Pea fragrances.

The last of the adorable triplet costumes is up (see the others here and here) and these ones are my favorite. Babies dressed as little adults is scientifically proven to be the cutest thing in the world. First, up, we’ve got our Oscar tribute, paying homage to those who passed on this year including David Bowie, Gene Wilder, and Prince.
