DIY flower lights

Bright lab lights paper flower tutorial

Have you seen these bright colored cotton ball light sets that are super common outside the US, by chance? Jordan Ferney of Oh Happy Day spotted them while living in Paris, and opened up Bright Lab Lights in 2014 as a US distributor. Hooray! They come in a variety of beautiful colors that you can custom pick out and they come in the prettiest box. The lights alone are gorgeous, but in that box they are perfect for gift giving, which I’ve done a number of times now.

We thought it would be fun to jazz them up for a party or home decor so we came up with this flower party garland, which is so so easy! We even have templates for you! We topped it off with some tassels and gold leafed beads and such. Too cute! DIY paper flower lights using Bright Lab on The House That Lars Built Read on →

Paint your old suitcases

paint a thrifted suitcase

We’re in the heart of our summer travels here at Lars. You too? Every time I pull out my old black suitcases I can audibly hear people whispering “boring!”. We can have none of that.

It was time for MAKEOVER!

I had a vision of my dream travel bags and it included bright colors and patterns. Flowers and stripes were a must, of course!

I partnered up with method, specifically their hand wash soap, to make the transformation happen. I found some rad vintage suitcases at the nearby thrift store and they were screaming at me…”make me over Brittany,” they said.

Here’s the thing about thrift stores, you guys. I love the unique items you can find and I love how no one else has what you have. BUT! I can’t stand the gritty, dirty feeling that inevitably comes from all the hands that have previously been on it. You just don’t know! And then you feel like you have to wash up every time you touch something. You know the feeling, right?

I thought it was the perfect opportunity to take a grimy situation and clean it up!

No pool? No problem!

No pool? No problem! A pool party for the pool-less by The House That Lars Built

It is H-O-T in Utah and the A/C at my office and in my car is less than stellar. When times get stifling, it’s time for some pool action. Alas! You have no pool, you say? Well, if there’s anything we’ve learned this summer it’s this, no pool? no problem! We put together a retro pool party for the pool-less with the help of Joss and Main. All it takes is the makings of pool time: kiddie pools, beach chairs, towels, tubes, inflatables, hammocks, and of course, sunscreen! You can shop the look here.

We arranged our pool party in a mandala shape. Turns out, everything is better in a mandala! The circulating pattern is conducive to conversation and mingling. It took a bit of prep to configure the shape, but we LOVE how it turned out. I’m thinking this would be a great set-up for a wedding or other big parties. Give it a try!

The secret of the mandala shape could only be revealed from a bird’s eye view, so we teamed up with Dane Christensen of SRNDPTS and Tanner Nielson on some drone photos along with this fun video up on our YouTube Channel! I’d love to hear what you think! See below for the full shoot and where to shop it.

Summer art printables

Sun Worshipper print by Samantha Hahn for The House That Lars Built

We collaborated with one of my favorite illustrators, Samantha Hahn, on some summer art prints that you can print off and hang up. She used her beautiful watercolor technique to create some fun summer sayings like “Sun worshipper”, “summer vacay”, and “picnic lunch” along with some gorgeous summer ladies and I added some flowers on top. Anna Killian captured the art images and now they are available for you! See the full collection below!

DIY Matisse-inspired cut out rug

DIY Matisse-inspired cut out rug
I’m thrilled to have contributor Meta Coleman share a fantastic DIY Matisse-inspired cut out rug using FLOR tiles. Enjoy!

A couple of years ago I had the opportunity to see an exhibit of Henri Matisse’s cut-outs at the Tate Modern Museum.  It was one of the most inspiring exhibits that I have been to in many years.  The exhibit showcased Matisse’s large scale cut-outs, the range of his painted color papers, and even some of his colored glass cut-outs.  I’ve seen Henri Matisse’s cut-outs before in text books and magazines, but to see it in person was such a different, dramatic, perhaps even life altering experience for me.  Everything was inspiring:  the shapes, the colors, the compositions.  I loved it all.  Since that exhibit I have wanted to make something inspired by his cut-outs, but I didn’t know exactly how or what I should do.
